I wonder if this is just for testing too; I have a hard time believing that Grand Avenue is being asked to break in large orders of two new types of buses simultaneously (they are also slated to get 58 O7 NGs any day now). |

Because the New Flyer was suppose to be retired. Originally RIOC ordered 8 Orion 07.501 Hybrids but only took delivery of 4. Probably a financially-related decision. So they still needed 3 to make score and for a spare factor. So they kept the 3 best ones: #1, 3 and 8. Bus #8 is used more as a spare parts bus, it hasn't seen service in quite some time and Bus #1 and 3 alternate. They need 5 Buses to make score, 4 buses running the regular RIOC Loop and 1 Bus on the Octagon Loop. Now RIOC just ordered an Orion 07.501 Next Generation so when that bus comes in, it'll be an all Orion. However with the upcoming Tram replacement, I don't think those two New Flyers will be going anywhere anytime soon. They'll need all the buses they have to run the RIOC loop service on the island as well as Buses going to and from Manhattan. -Trevor www.ttmg.org |

No idea, seeing as how when the order really starts to flow in, the first 45 are Quill bound and the last 45 are Grand Avenue bound, subject to change. So that would put 1300-1344 at MJQ and 1345-1389 at Grand Avenue, AGAIN subject to change. But my guess is that 1303 is there to get the depot ready for the order, operator's and mechanics trained on the bus. What I did notice while riding it yesterday is that the Turbine does not run at all times. However when it does run, it makes a REALLY annoying high-pitched whine sound that gets old REAL quick, ESPECIALLY if you're sitting in the back. Whats funny also is that after you shut the bus off the turbine keeps going for a few minutes until it shuts off. Makes you think you didn't shut down properly. |

The turbine isn't too obnoxious though - it's pretty quiet, especially with the HVAC going. A nice tune like All 4 One's "My Child" playing through your headphones from your Cowon iAudio S9 could tune it out easily. |

I don't know the specifics, but it does something extra than the normal loop. I timed the buses yesterday. seems as if it takes a bus roughly 10-15 minutes to make a complete loop. Buses running roughly every 5-8 minutes.Example Bus 1 leaves the tram at 5PM gets back at 5:15PM and leaves again at 5:20PM. 4 Bus is what is needed to keep the loop moving. Usually a bus arrives at the Trams station while one is still there, so there is SOME overlap and time for recovery. The Octogon Local bus seemed to show up once every 15 minutes and it was just the same bus on the same line. ![]() -Trevor www.ttmg.org |

Let's see, I rode it from end to end on B43. It ran without the Turbine from Empire Bl to somewhere along Graham Avenue, so at least half the line it ran without the Turbine going. Then it was on for the rest of the trip. The B43 is about a 1 hour and 15 minutes from end to end.I mean in terms of fuel savings that's GREAT and puts the DesignLine Hybrid above and beyond the standard Series and Parallel Hybrid's that are seen on today's New Flyer, Orion, Gillig and NABI buses. If the turbine operates like how I seen it, that means that the Turbine is running HALF the time the bus out on the road, while the rest of the time is PURE electric. That is CONSIDERABLE fuel savings than having a standard internal combustion engine operating at the same RPM constantly the entire day in service. Aside from no need for fluid changes and belts, the DesignLine is poised to be a REAL green economy bus and I applaud the MTA taking a leadership role in embracing this technology on a large scale. -Trevor www.ttmg.org |

I think you still need to change the oil -- there are less moving parts in a turbine than in a piston engine, but those that do move move at a higher speed and a hotter temperature.... |
