NJT's New fare collection system {UPDATE}

Here is the latest news on New Jersey Transit's new fare collection system. The existing registers and fareboxes will be rebuilt and upgraded rather than be replaced outright. Cubic has the contract for this work. The registers will have a "reader" that will allow the passenger to "tap" rather than "swipe" a credit card. Initially, the cards will be limited to Master Card only. But it is expected that all major credit cards will be accepted at some point soon. A way is being devised that will insure that the credit card companies can not have access to their competitors proprietary customer info. A firm in Upstate New York will handle this for NJT.

Greenville Garage in Jersey City is the pilot or test bed for the new system. The new system is scheduled to take effect on November 30th. However, it is possible that it may not happen until January 15th, 2010. If a passenger with a Master Card, that has the necessary embedded chip, signs up for and pays for a monthly {one zone} pass, the card will act as his/her pass. When the card is "tapped" on the reader, the register would "read" that he/she has a valid one zone monthly pass account {paid for} and flash this info to the bus operator. If the person has no valid monthly pass on his/her embedded Master Card, a one zone fare will be charged to the cardholder's account and registered on the farebox.

It is expected that other garages will be added at some point if everything goes as planned. Also, other modes, such as light rail {proof of payment} and rail will be included. It is yet to be determined how the multiple types of fares will be handled on those operations. I suggested that fare inspectors on PofP lines could have portable, hand-held readers to spot check passenger's cards.

Also, the system will eventually be extended to include multiple zone lines. Also to be addressed is the fact that monthly rail pass holders are permitted to ride on PofP light rail lines, such as the RiverLINE. Also of note is that the transaction time is only a fraction of a second. And of note is that PATH will be joining NJT on this initial system. It is expected to later include New York's MTA and Philly's SEPTA, both of which are working on it. It will eventually be an "Easy Pass" for mass transit, good in many places.

Places like RITEAID and Foodtown already accept all three credit card RFID system (MasterCard's, VISA's, and AMEX's) so I don't see why this should be a problem.

Not necessarily the same; the system needs to be able to calculate the proper zones on the buses (especially with NJT and SEPTA).

Wow! I had no clue that NJT was so far along with such a program. Are they planning to ever issue their own NJT-brand "Smartcard" for those without credit cards?

Where can I find information about their plans for the fare collection upgrade? I haven't been able to find much outside of the new TVMs.

Ah, I think it is assumed though. Weren't the new TVMs on the River LINE built to be compatible with the FREEDOM Card...someday?

I think NJT will have the challenge of being compatible with SEPTA, PATCO, PATH, and the MTA. I hope they are all at one table, discussing compatibility with one another. I'd invite DART First State to sit in as well, since they are integrated with SEPTA media by permitting the use of SEPTA passes for their fares in New Castle County.

I really can't wait to see what happens. It would be great if they got some federal grants for this project as well!

When will NYCTA buses get a new tap system? I have an ANNUAL metrocard through my job, and it's the bus fareboxes which do the most scraping and damage. Its not so complicated you dimwit. Its the same technology. Go back to school.

Unfortunately for you, you're wrong and Terrapin is 100% correct.

EZP uses a proprietary transponder to handle toll collection, and your tolls are debited from an EZP account that you periodically refresh with a credit/debit card authorization. The toll booth could care less what credit card you use; it's looking for its own transponder. The upcoming NJT system uses everyone's personal credit card/tap card. You don't wave/tap your Visa at a toll booth and have your toll deducted on the fly from your credit/checking account balance. Unlike EZP, NJT's new system does not require you to create an account with them that you fill with money. Your personal credit/tap card will serve as your monthly pass as well as the source for paying cash fares.

Try putting your personal issues with other posters aside and pay attention to the content of what's being discussed.

Technically, I'm not wrong and Terrapin is not 100% correct. This technology, RFID has been already in use in many properties. Im pointing using EZ-Pass for this example because it is accepted at many locations.

My point was why dont all major and smaller transit agencies to join in one fare media and that would save lots of cost. It's not that hard, the technology is already there. We could use Hong Kong's system "Octopus Card" as good example that is accepted almost anywhere.

It will soon be 2010. 2012 isn't really that far off for such a complex system. But I think it will be great once it's proven and the bugs are worked out. Yes, the technology is there and it will simplify things for passengers who might use several transit systems. They won't need to find change for exact fares or even carry much money at all. And the "tap" rather than "swipe" method will be a vast improvement. There have been many problems with the "swipe" system, in NYC and elsewhere. I envision this new system to spread all over the Northeast, to many transit systems. Like I said, it will be an equivalent to the E-Z Pass system, but for mass transit.

RFID isn't that widely used yet. Most of the hurdles are not technological, but are institutional.

Revenue sharing is a brutal process. The fees for the MTA to process MetroCard revenue for non-MTA carriers is substantial. How can revenue sharing be done without losing 5%-10% of the fare in transaction costs?

EZ Pass is a real pain in the butt. The lag times are so bad that you will get all kinds of rubbish mailed to your house because they did not process the payment fast enough. NJT's systems are going to have to be able to keep up with processing things in real time. Batching will have to be continuous. On the TVMs, that is no problem. On a bus, it requires a reliable connection and no driver assistance. It is doable, but it is not cheap.

lol, idiot. this isn't E-ZPass. This is far more complicated. I know more about E-ZPass than you'll ever know, LOL.

It's called E-ZPass, dude. And just because you envision the new system to spread across the whole northeast, doesn't mean it will. You'll be lucky if it is NJT+MTA in the next 5 years, and maybe SEPTA too within 10 years. The revenue sharing details would be quite complicated, much more so than with "E-ZPass".

Unfortunately for you, you're wrong and Terrapin is 100% correct. Try putting your personal issues with other posters aside and pay attention to the content of what's being discussed.

Thank you very much.

Most of the hurdles are not technological, but are institutional.

Revenue sharing is a brutal process. The fees for the MTA to process MetroCard revenue for non-MTA carriers is substantial. How can revenue sharing be done without losing 5%-10% of the fare in transaction costs?

That's exactly what I have been telling the little shit.

One can look towards the DC Area transit agencies for help with having a "1 card pays for all" type of system. Of course, the Smartrip doesn't have monthly/weekly/daily pass capabilities yet, but I hear it was very hard just to get the system to work in its current state, free transfers and all!

I think something like an "outside account" has to be created for a "Northeast Hyride Card" to be created. Plus, northeastern properties have widely varying fare policies. If they aren't consolidated somehow, it could be very complicated.

However, the immense headaches developing such a program could really be worth it...but there needs to be enough stable funding for ALL AGENCIES for this project to work. It'll be very tough for agencies because they are not in the business of processing transactions, etc...but moving people most efficiently.

That's where a lot of the issues lie. The rest of the stuff has already been worked out, in theory, seeing as how the MTA and PANYNJ share Pay-Per-Ride Metrocard revenue.
