Update on Capitol Trailways- Not Good |
|
|
Posted by Dieseljim50 on Tue Jun 30 17:54:49 2009 I just got an update on the state of affairs at Capitol Trailways of Pennsylvania; 15 out of 43 buses are said to be in a state of disrepair/out of service, thus necessitationg the rental of a like number of buses just to cover the routes. Let's hope Bieber will save the day for this once mighty member of the old National Trailways Bus System.Staytuned, the soap opera continues. |

If companies do not change with it, they are finished. I hate using passenger vans for certain types of work, but they are a useful tool for routes that are getting too thin. Academy and a few other companies are learning this on their own and the rest will learn the hard way.Companies like Capitol and Susquehanna need to think about acquiring high roof vans for their long haul work. |

What line-runs does Academy use vans for?As far as I know they just flip their DL's and D's from commuter and casino runs into charters and shuttles and vice versa...thus the reason they have sustained their AC line runs for as long as they have... |

But Capitol does have a lot of old A3 buses that they should consider replacing. I think the MC-9s are one.The 15 buses out of service - do those include the ex-Beiber buses that were placed on the Reading-King of Prussia-Philadelphia line? Also, does Capitol - well, Beiber now - get operating subsidies? I honestly think that they should work with SEPTA to establish a sort of commuter service between Reading, King of Prussia (better yet, Norristown at that wonderful bus terminal they build there) and Philadelphia. Maybe just coordinate schedules to make a guaranteed connection to Regional Rail at the transportation center. I imagine any outside money could help in this case. Actually, how is Beiber doing in these times? They tend to outprice themselves from the competition in my opinion. |

Beiber's New York service is doing fairly well from what I see at the PABT - Philadelphia though not quite sure, but I'm pretty sure that they do not receive subsidies... |

In 2003, I enjoyed a trip on a pool run from Rochester to Harrisburg on a Capitol bus. I did it to relive my mid-1970's experiences of riding overnight Greyhound-Continental Trailways pool bus from Buffalo and Williamsport (which went onto DC), and connected with a B&C model 05 Eagle transcon bus to New York of which there were 4 a day.The Greyhound Buffalo-Batavia-Elmira local route is gone 25 years, victim of NYS and PA bus deregulation. Continental Trailways' transcon route is entirely obliterated (except maybe Denver-Salt Lake). Susquehanna runs Elmira-Williamsport, and runs a local service from there to New York. That is probably an old Edwards Motor Transit (Continental Trailways in Pennsylvania) franchise. Today, you can only do that southbound out of Rochester in one day. The the portion north of Elmira is an isolated New York Trailways schedule. |

I rode that Greyhound-Trailways pool bus Buffalo to Mount Morris via Batavia and frequently got one of the Silver Eagles assigned to Edwards or GMC PD4107 No.33460 which alternated with the Silver Eagles on the run. Both O1 and O5 Eagles were used on the run, which drew a Greyhound Scenicruiser on one occasion.Deregulation WAS a mistake, at least the way it was done. |
