Just finished putting all the data into an easy to read and sortable Excel spreadsheet.

Some of those express routes ridership numbers are awful. Also, it's hard to believe that the B25 was on the chopping block (it had quite solid ridership).

It was on the chopping block because of duplication by the A/C train.

Thanks for posting that. Does anyone have an idea if ridership figures for MTA bus routes will be released?

S60, Q 79, S 55, S56, S 67, S 89, B 51, Q 75, M 18, S 93 are at the bottom 10 and notice that 6 of the 10 routes were on the chopping list. What I do find intersting most of the routes are from SI. But if MTA Bus was added in the mix I think the Q 89, Q 103 would probably be in the mix.

Interesting stuff.

The weekend services that were going to be canned carried more people on the weekend as a group than the illegal S89 carries all week. The S60 should be an on-call Access-A-Ride van on the weekends. It is cheaper to operate that for free than to put a 40 foot bus there. However, the canning of these routes would have saved just $289,000 while shutting down the S89 would save $1,200,000. Then, they could extend the S93 down to the Eltingville Transit Center to pick up the 450 Richmond Avenue limited passengers. Assigning all of those buses to the S93 would produce a far larger ridership gain at much lower cost.

Does anyone now wonder why the MTA never escapes from financial peril?

Because the problems in SI are from the non-major express bus lines (the X1, 10, 12/42, and 17 carry, but some others don't).
