I suppose they could remove all the mechanical units and such, but then again I recall reading a link posted here a while ago to an MTA auction for buses. I think most of them had either both or one of the engine and transmission still present. Of course if these are broken/well worn they may not bother to remove them, but the scrapyards probably would do so, recondition them, and sell them on, either outright or as exchange units.

In addition, the buses were equipped with scrap tires. However, in almost all cases, the transmission was removed.

Let's be realistic - there is zero chance that an MTA-funded bus museum will be put anywhere.

Museums are not always the safest bet would you believe, even once there buses can get forsaken.

I wonder what is different between that bus, and the other three million RT-types that are already preserved in Britain. It would be nice to save everything but some are just better of being the victim of a 'mercy killing'!

I would think the reason they were on scrap tyres is that they have received them off buses still in use. No-one with any sense is going to send six tyres with life left in them to the scrapyard.

I believe the MTA leases tires. So only scrap tires can be used for one way bus trips. NIMCO can use those too...they chop up rubber and it can be used for asphalt and rubber mats.

IAWTP. The buses are better off where they are. If this was realistic, then I'd say someplace close to Downtown Brooklyn and the TM would be an ideal spot for it.

Like Avenue B & East Broadway 414 at Trolley Valhalla

Or CTA 375 at the Chicagoland Historical Bus Museum

Well what if there was a museum and what if it becomes popular?
I mean if there was one centralized location that was around for at least 3months, I'm sure it would be well visited. Plus if it doesn't work out then they can just go back to the current arrangement being one day out of the year and the December bus runs [if there's the money to run them].

Seems to me that the present MTA arrangement is best- keep the vintage buses INSIDE, at the various depots. I feel there probably isn't the public support for a good NYCTA bus museum, and putting them in the middle of nowhere, like Floyd Bennett, is asking for trouble.

There's a good thing and a bad thing about Floyd Bennett Field. The good thing is that there's plenty of space there. The bad thing was that it's a pain in the ass to get to. And not only that...it was held there every year since I first went there back in 2002. IMO, the locations could be changed to accomodate others coming from other places around the city.
