OH NOES! The express bus fare to go up to $7.50! |

Posted by QM18Express on Wed Nov 19 10:41:20 2008 And also Access A Ride users would also get a huge increase as their fares will go up from $2 to about $5 or $6 as the MTA is going to charge the max amount that is allow by the ADA law.http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/89182/new-mta-budget-hikes-fares-still-higher/Default.aspx |

Other things that the MTA should do also are go to OPTO full-time on the L (and station nurses at key stations in the system in association with the HHC). Then install cameras so that all NTTs can go OPTO.And for the 42 Street Shuttle, I wonder if the MTA should go to OPTO with only one person off-peak and weekends. But for Able-Ride in Nassau, is the MTA going to go to a strict 3/4 mile zone? If so, areas in the far northeast of Nassau County (i.e., Muttontown, Oyster Bay, Bayville) would lose paratransit service. In NYC, there would be very few areas outside the 3/4 mile zone that aren't on privately owned (and taxed) roadways. |

I don't see $7.50; $6 maybe, but $5.50 is much more likely. Remember, they like to show how bad it COULD be, not how bad it really is. |

So, when are we gonna see those farebox taking paper money? No one will carry $7.50 in quarters, dime, nickel, and even pennies to put on the farebox just for one ride. Im not going to carry $15.00 in change to put on the farebox. |

I am willing to bet that 99% of x-bus fares are paid with Metrocard. It's rare that I see someone put any coins in the farebox at all. |

I see only 65% or so pay w/ MetroCard on my bus. As for Bills accepted the MTA would have to invest in new fareboxes on express buses. When we accepted bills a breif time after the takeover the MTA said it cost $1.25 per every $1 bill collected to ensure that it wasn't stolen & to count. The MTA doesn't physcally count coins they are sorted and weighed for the dollar amount. Bills ave to be sorted and counted. I don't see the MTA going through the trouble of investing in new farebox technology and changing it's proceedures anytime soon. |

We at LLE and NYBS had two boxes. The Cubic and a seperate bill conveyer box whic actually didnt count the bill it was upon visual inspection that thje fare was tallied on the Cubic by a key sroke. Wow intresting they had two seperate boxes. The older GFI GenFares were pretty much the same way. I like those because they took anything u put in the box. You'd have to inspect the bills, since the box only registered $1 bills. The GFI Odyssey has its ups and downs. I particularly like the fact the Odysseys, well at least where Im at, counts $ 1,2,5,and 10 demoninations. If its a bad bill ( torn, counterfeit ), it will spit it back out. As far as the coins you pretty much have to insert one at a time. In the unlikely event a passenger throws all his coins in at one time, we're provided with a coin unjammer, which is about the size of a slotted/flathead screwdriver We at LLE and NYBS had two boxes. The Cubic and a seperate bill conveyer box whic actually didnt count the bill it was upon visual inspection that thje fare was tallied on the Cubic by a key sroke. We were not as sophisticated w/ the GFI Odessey. |

I see it as convenience to offer something like the odyssey. Some people may not be able to get to a MetroCard Outlet, vendor, TVM for whatever ... not to mention getting change for a dollar is a hassle itself.if a passenger is short fare one time for whatever reason, just quote the proper fare for next time and move on. |

MTA is losing money and there is many factors to this. For example and (this is widespread problem including local buses): The person dips the MetroCard in and the reader says no money on the MetroCard, but the person have $5 bill on hand except no coins and explain to the B/O for the reason. Yet B/O let the person ride for free. $5.00 to pay the If and it is a big If, the MTA is going to raise the express fare, they will have to put paper money farebox next to the coin/ MC farebox for the convenience of the passenger who dont have a MetroCard, coins. but the passenger has green paper money surely they want to put inside the farebox somehow. MTA likes green paper money and they sure can use some. |

Yeah I used the GFI GenFares at Bee-Line. The MTA uses a box that was designed to work w/ Cubic software and Keene Vaulting. They could have went to a system such as yours, but that was too smart. The bill conveyer didn't count anything at all it just pulled the bills in and we inspected through a window it was seperate from the actual farebox the we push a key on the Cubic unit which tallies full fare. Funny right. |

Yes but it won't fit on the MCI, NYBS had to remove the first front seats to accomidate a bill conveyer on their MCI's. The MTA doesn't want to count money as they feel there is an issue w/ theft and cost. The MTA getting in their own way again. |

There's always SOME degree of scare tactics involved in these things. This time, I suspect the scare tactics are a bit closer, though probably not all the way, to reality.I'll predict an express bus fare of $6-$7, inclusive. I don't see a 50 cent increase as menaingful in the present environment, while anything over $7 is ridiculous, this year. In a year or two, who knows... |

I have the answer! The United States should eliminate all bills lower than $5, just like Canada, and only have $1 and $2 coins. This way, an express bus rider would only need three $2 coins, one $1 coin, and two quarters to ride! :-) |

I think that it's safe to say that most regular riders would have purchased their MetroCard the previous work day while in Manhattan, instead of letting it run out and having no value first thing in the morning. And as far as first time riders, I guess they can deal with carrying $7.50 in change for one lousy day. |

I supose you may be right here- I haven't lived in Yonkers since ear;y 1999. As I'm sure you know, in those days, the only service "North of the Border" that took Metro cards was the BxM3.But I'd bet a lot of folks around there go into the Bronx- it's so close, after all. It's still not impossible to get a Metro Card, I'm sure. |

A lot of the smaller delis on S.I. have stopped selling metrocards. The new odd-priced ones are a pain for the merchants. Thriftway drug stores sell them, Stop-N-Shop doesn't and I don't know if Pathmark or King Kullen sell them.Anyway, daily x-bus riders should sign up (or download a paper application form) for the "EasyPayXpress MetroCard" here: EasyPayXpress MetroCard Application and not have to bother with buying and replenishing metrocards locally. |

They do forget and the MTA says tell them "fare please", if they don't pay "let'em ride, you job is to request the fare NOT enforce it." That is the MTA policy. As far as first time riders how do intend for them to come back in order to bolster ridership if it become inconvenient to ride, thus ridership stay only w/ regulars who aslo balk at $7.50 in change, then they don't ride so it's the circle of life Simba. |

Yes I am a B/O out of Yonkers, I see it all the time, The issue lies w/ point of sale locations that only sell Unlimiteds and don't offer the Express Bus Plus weekly card, all over the place not just on the BxM3. Not impossible, but difficult when your catching my bus that leaves at 6:30 AM from Getty Square. |

That option isn't compatible with TransitChek. And because of the odd bonus amounts, I usually wind up with $1, $2, or $4 left on a card, and since the machines don't let you combine card values, I have to go to a booth, and the booth agents seem perturbed to do this. |
