Staten Island-New Jersey local bus service

I was just wondering if there are any more plans for any bus service between Staten Island and New Jersey. I've always wondered how a Staten Island-Jersey Gardens route would do.

Good question. Maybe a Staten Island - Elizabeth route serving Downtown/Midtown, Jersey Gardens and possibly Newark Liberty International Airport might be good.

There are early plans when Charleston opens for a route subsidized by PANYNJ to Newark Airpot.

But a stop at Jersey Gradens does sound like a great idea.

Finally, a bus/ferry route suggestion that I made here that has gotten approval!

But anyways, the proposed Newark Liberty route seems like it would do very well for the island. Is it known where it would run in Staten Island yet?

Don't be surprised if they shift those other buses over there and put racks in them. You can put racks right over the front wheel housings. The MTA has already studied running to Newark Airport from Richmond Avenue and the previous study assumed the use of MCIs. They were going to charge $7. They may charge a double local fare and use transit buses (similar to WMATA's B30).

They could still save face by not being ordered to do it.

I don't think there's enough of a market on SI for a route to Newark Airport. Staten Islanders using the airport have someone drive them there or take a car/limo service to the airport.

Unless the MTA feels that there are enough airport employees to justify such a route. If the target is employees then you might get away with using local equipment. If the target is travlers then coach buses are a must for reasons of comfort.

Wasn't there a private service a few years ago that ran from the SI mall parking lot? Olympia Trails?

That's the bottom line. These kind of bus routes are only good for the people who work there to get to/from work. Let's be practical: if you buy a lot of stuff you have to lug it a long way and up and down a narrow bus stairway, taking up extra sitting room on the bus, and once it;s time to get off you could leave a package on the bus in your haste to exit.

Those shoppers are most likely stay on S.I. to shop. If they have to lug back big items they call car service. Easier to load an HDTV into a car service car than onto a bus, even a coach bus.

Isn't that one of the after-effects of increased growth and service to the Jersey City Waterfront from carriers such as Academy, Coach USA and NJT? - A faster way into lower Manhattan

I happen to think a revival of service into SI for that purpose from Jersey would be beneficial, even though a lot of people would be hesitant because they will lose their one-seat ride

This idea for NJT to send Central Jersey buses to Secaucus Junction in the event of extreme delays is a great idea - I wish they would extend the option for everyday AM peak travel into the city, it could prove very beneficial

That is correct. The Pulaski Skyway can be brutal during rush hours. It is also why I think the North Shore Railroad on Staten Island should not be light rail, but a diesel/third rail railroad instead. An increasing number of SI residents work in New Jersey at places like New Brunswick and Princeton as well as at Raritan Center. In addition, many SI students are going to school in NJ. Essex County Community College (for example) has lots of NY plates there for a NJ school.

This summer's fuel spike has a lot of people on edge about driving. They do not ever want to be in a position to be taken advantage of again. The right scale of transportation (even vans) could gain new traction next year.

Have you thought about a reverse-peak initiative to get commuters from SI into Central Jersey to these workplaces, is there a market for that in the form of limited commuter line runs?

I too agree with the "right scale of transportation" concept, what I expect to see more of in the future (not necessarily near future) is customized commuter transport service using mid-size coaches or vans retro-fitted the same way Bolt and Megabus are, with wi-fi and electrical outlets - maybe even a complimentary newspaper, to make the morning commute more productive, that's the trend in transportation right now and its only going to continue

"Have you thought about a reverse-peak initiative to get commuters from SI into Central Jersey to these workplaces, is there a market for that in the form of limited commuter line runs?"

There is a market to Newark. After stabilizing the 144, we are going to send buses to Newark. We'll run that one via EWR. After Jersey City, Journal Square and Newark are the top calls that we get.

Raritan Center is tempting, but the ready availability of parking and the short distance is a disadvantage for commuter operations. New Brunswick and Princeton via Route 1 and the corporate complexes is a possibility. Jersey Gardens is a possibility as the North Shore would gobble that up.

The intriguing markets are the factory shift change markets in NJ. I am a big fan of manufacturing since it provides good jobs for normal people (in general).

I really like a North Shore line to Jersey Gardens that you are suggesting, definitely would have demand - what about a line from SI Mall via Richmond up to the North Shore and Victory Blvd to Jersey Gardens, EWR and Newark? What is demand for that

I agree with your assessment on the Raritan Center service, I've never thought of sending service from SI to Route 1, even though that's pretty much the new technology drive on the NE Corridor, maybe a line to Metropark for NE Corridor reverse peak would be more efficient in terms of getting buses back on runs to create greater flexibility in scheduling and also serving that whole business park corridor

It was not a Red and Tan line. Red and Tan ran from Keansburg to Manhattan via Staten Island. It was the original 99 line.

There was a company called Arrow Coach Lines that had ICC rights to run from the SI Ferry to downtown Elizabeth. That line stopped running by the early 1970s.

Hudson Bus ran the 99S. Most of the service ran between the Port Authority and the southern end of Bayonne. There were at it's peak 5 trips a day onto Staten Island. All 5 went to Perth Amboy and 2 or three continued to Keansburg depending on if it was winter or summer. Eventually Hudson Bus gave up the extended trips to S.I., Perth Amboy and Keansburg. Domenico tried to pick up that service with connecting service at City Line on the Boulevard. That ended also.
