Orion VII Wrecked |

Posted by mta_si on Fri Oct 24 14:03:57 2008 I am out of town for the weekend, but I was informed we have a wrecked Orion VII in the yard. Anybody going by Castleton I'm told bus is near the first shack all the way up against the chain fence in the far left corner of the yard.Any updates? |

Mears have over 40 DME, 38 DCL buses, 14 Nabi 416, 17 Trolley, over 100 T2145 & C2045 buses and 12 old MCI. Disney World bought DME & DCL buses and give it to Mears to cover the line for next 8 years over 100 millions $$$$$ per year. Also i just got 85 cent raise yesterday. This is the airport to resort operation where the passengers (or guests) get off the plane and on to the bus without the worry of their luggage.A similar operation operates in California. Several years ago, Disney "privatized" their own operation of the Lake Buena Vista hotel zone buses to Comet Bus Lines. Comet may have gone out of business. We lose 6 diffrent Contracts last year because some resorts don't want to pay more $$$$$ also we lose Disney Employee Routes to American Coach Line early this year.David |

I spoke to an operator today back home and was told that bus is got severe damage and will be flat bedded out of depot sometime tonite or tommorow. It appears to have significant damage and cannot be towed. I will try to get more info when i fly home tonite |

I think on the second day we visited the Mears yard (not far from the football stadium?)Also, in the summer of 2000, I went up to Orlando area to do a few days of Disney, and the shuttle bus from the Holiday Inn (Nikki Bird) I stayed at was operated by Mears. |

Details are now available though, and it was a "preventable" accident though thats just usual standard TA practice. The bus was involved in an accident on Richmond Terrace near nicholas street and involved a building uder construction and a crane. Bus passed by crane that was turning and the bottom part of cranes base hit side of the bus. Bus was not in service but an operator doing line training was operating the bus. MTA operator was also on board during deadhead to ferry. Usually line training does not have new driver do deadheading. But never the less crane hit bus causing damage in right rear/side. The battery packs were not damage but the rear wheel area was severly compromised. Bus was also damaged more during transport back to depot as the tow line were set too low causing damage to under carriage, thus reason bus is being flatbedded for repair. Bus is not a total loss and should be back in service within 6 months. |

The only real problem is with the city, however...and Richmond Terrace which will damage any bus.The solution may be to move bus deadheads to a slightly longer route along Castleton Avenue to beyond Snug Harbor. |

Mears has never operated the Disney employee shuttle, Disney operates their own internal shuttle for Cast Members and what American is doing now is the College Program kids. Right before New Year Eve of 2007 Disney World gave contract to Mears over 5 years to do Disney Employee Shuttle not Disney Transports Shuttle Cast Members. Couple week after New Year Day of 2008 something going on between Mears & Disney World about $$$$$. Disney World took away the Contract from Mears & give back to American Coach Line. My personal feeling without getting to detailed or anyone in trouble is two thingsa) lack of training each operator need 8 hours of training per bus model. b) manufacture defects which cause problems that effect operators ie, poor sight lines, interlock failure. |

The way the MTA has cut their budget in terms of scheduling efficiency is to tighten schedules. On SI, adding time to schedules would create an immediate bus shortage of 20-30 buses. |

Making the schedules "reliable" on Staten Island would take quite a few buses to do so. It would take at least 20 buses just to keep guys off of Richmond Terrace on all routes while maintaining the 15 minute peak headway on the ferry routes.What did they do with their last bunch of "surplus" buses? Did they fix the schedule? Of course they didn't. Running very tight schedules is a "productivity improvement", showing that the MTA can reduce its budget. The fact that it comes up on the back end as overtime has been (until very recently) inconsequential. The whole goal is to pare down the advertised budget and when it blows up, they procure "emergency funds". This year's fuel spike was totally unpredictable, but the agency's need to overspec the most simple things got them burned on the fuel contract. My point is that you could fix the schedule on the back of a napkin. I could take another napkin and increase express bus service coverage by imposing a 20-25% cut in capacity on today's express bus system and move everyone while adding new service to Jersey Gardens and New Brunswick. However, the MTA is not interested in running a reliable schedule. Once the bus goes out the door, all sorts of excuses can be and are made. |

You get those kind of numbers at a private bus company where anybody gets pulled off of the street. Something has to be done. Mears is now the Disney contractor for the LBV/Downtown Disney buses using ex-AC Transit equipment.I remember in the 80's when Orlando Gray Line bought a bunch of ex-Golden Gate Transit fishbowls - - complete with red wheels!! These were sardine cans, similar to NY Bus Service fishbowls. No leg roon for anyone over 5'6"!! Unfortunately, I have no pictures of them as I was making the transition from railfan to God awful buses!!! |
