I wonder why Phoenix doesn't get some D/C40LFRs, all of theirs seem to be the boxy looking LF.

Because Phoenix doesn't want to pay the extra $5,000 per bus to get the restyling, not to mention the more expensive USSC seats and corrugated, vandal-resistant walls that the RPTA buses have (despite the Phoenix buses being the most exposed to vandalism). Still, the RPTA C40LFRs/D40LFRs are much more comfortable and attractive than their Phoenix counterparts (with the exception that the Phoenix buses have brighter windows).

Is the fire suppression system a white, sandy substance that drops out of the rear end of the bus? I ask because I saw an ElDorado E-Z Rider belonging to Tempe with its rear engine door open and a person sweeping some sandy stuff outside of the bus.

That would be it. I've seen 2 or 3 Sun Tran C40HFs parked with that pile of sandy stuff. I don't believe that it was coming out of 6410. However, the operator had trouble starting up 6410 and he claimed that it had to do with the fire suppression system not allowing him to start the bus up after the bus shut itself down at Lolama Station. He eventually was able to get it down to College Ave. where it was replaced with 6404.

I actually don't mind the 2007 Phoenix D40LFs/D60LFs. IMHO, they're better and more comfortable than the 1998-2002 Phoenix NABI 40-LFW fleet. Would I have preferred Phoenix to get D40LFRs and D60LFRs with the USSC seats? Yes. Would it be worth $630,000 - $756,000 more ($5000 - $6000 per bus for 126 buses). Maybe. The Phoenix buses are generally used on higher ridership lines which are more prone to abuse (except for the 60, 80, 90, 106, 122, 138, 154, 170, 186) and I am sure that replacing/repairing the USSC seats is more expensive than replacing/repairing the present type of seat.

I actually would have preferred Phoenix get DE40LFs and DE60LFs.

The RPTA's newest buses (6597-6648) don't have the corrugated walls however (I actually prefer the corrugated walls to the smooth walls).

The thing is, Los Angeles (which is the second-biggest bus system in the country) has bought buses with those USSC seats since 2002 and they still look pretty attractive.

I also like the corrugated walls too as they remind me of LA Metro buses, which have the best interior design out of any bus out there IMHO.

I still think that the Phoenix interior beats this (the largest bus system in the country), although they both use similar typpes of seats. The carpeted walls on the Orion VIIs and some of the New Flyers just seems strange to me. Sorry about the photos, I was using my camera phone:

Unfortunately I've never ridden LACMTA. I've only ridden MTA New York City Transit, MTA Bus, WMATA, San Diego Transit/MTS, Valley Metro, and Sun Tran. Of the ones that I have ridden, the RPTA definitely seems to have the best bus interior design (on the C40LFRs/60BRTs). Also, when I was really young I rode on SMART in metro Detroit (although I didn't really remember the interiors of their RTSs).

I thought the price differential was a little more than $5K. The bid price for 6501 (et al) was $317,500 (in 2005). Some spec changes added $16,800 to the first 64, and $26,300 to the final 32.

The bid price (2008) for the next group of RPTA D40LFRs is $432,500.

I forgot to say: nice pics!

Also, some small updates from Tempe today (I am typing this from the wifi-equipped McAllister Shuttle bus, Blue Bird Xcel 102 64574).

1. I saw 6637 and 6621 in service today. So far nothing reported or seen above 6638.

2. Not only did Tempe not take the 35-LFWs off the 72 as I thought, they put 6181 (which is assigned to FLASH) on that route!

Is 6181 in FLASH or Valley Metro livery? Also, I took these photos yesterday of 6173 which has to be the cleanest Tempe NABI (at least on the outside) that I have ever seen.

Is 6181 the bus that is painted all in white with the TIM logo on the sides and the back (and when I say "white" it was different from what we are used to)?

I saw such a bus, but I do not remember what number it was.

I actually heard someone say (when they saw that bus), "Oh! A new bus."
I laughed.

Actually it has been in neither since September 2006 (before that it was in FLASH livery).

In September 2006, this bus was repainted into Tempe In Motion "house colors", which initially was all white but then following the 10th Anniversary of Tempe in Motion in October, a large TIM decal was added, as well as handprints from various people who attended the event (mine included, it was on the rear door). However, back in summer 2007 the handprints were removed and now the bus is in an ultra-dull white scheme with TIM stickers on the sides and rear (but not on the front). Inside, the bus is no different than when it was in the FLASH scheme.

On last Friday, I Rode 2007 New Flyer D40LFR on Route 573- Arrowhead/Downtown Express from Glendale Park and Ride to Arrowhead Towne Center.

I talk with the bus operator from Valutrans (RPTA). I ask her questions about Valutrans getting more routes? They said to me "They are getting city routes if they are successful on express routes".

Also, a 2008 C40LFR delivery update:

As of yesterday, I saw 6641 running in Tempe.

Getting close to 6648 and the hybrid...if it isn't in service already!

Still I have yet to ride on "batch 2" of the 2008 C40LFRs (anything higher than 6616 and with the different type of LED lights)
