Portland ME Elderly & Disabled Riders Save Their Bus Stop |

Posted by Massbusmark on Thu Aug 14 17:06:53 2008 The Greater Portland Transit District (a/k/a METRO) held public hearings on a proposed overhaul of the system's routes. The residents of an elderly housing building voiced opposition to the plan to eliminate the portion of the Route 8 Peinsula Loop that currently passes by their building. The closest stop would have been a block away at the bottom of a hill. METRO officials will now present an alternate proposal which would have this portion of the route 8 serviced once an hour. The Route 8 has 30 minute headways on weekdays served by 2 buses. Thus, the new plan would have one bus an hour operate via the new route, the other bus would serve the area slated to be cut from the route. More on this, along with 2 pics of METRO 9006, a 1990 Flxible from the Portland Press Herald:http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/story.php?id=204642&ac=PHnws Kudos to the METRO officials who actually listened to the concerns of the bus riders and brought a new proposal to the table, and also good to see a Flxible posed for the press!!
