Telling apart an MCI B3 from a C3 |
|
|
Posted by AMoreira81 on Wed Jul 16 11:44:48 2008 I know this sounds like a n00b question, but these are the two models I absolutely cannot distinguish. Can anyone offer tips...i.e., is the B3 essentially a D3 with the A3-C3 tail lights?Information is appreciated. |

On the right side of a C series, the fuel door & battery comp. are immediately after the front wheel well like an A/B series. On the L/S the HVAC unit is also located after the front wheel well. The difference between the C & D series is the the C series is essentially the same as the A & B except the back vents are like the D series. The first D series buses had the same lights as an A-C series w/o the top brake lights. These are only cosmetic features the mechanical features vary, between each model. |

The B and C Series is a little weird. The C Series carried to looks, the original C Series was essentially a A Series with Paintable Sides and what became the D face. The ORIGINAL B Series was a updated take on the A Series, however that was short lived. Quickly, the B Series went through a redesign and became what the D was. The B was discontinued completely in early 1993. From early 1993 to late 1993, The C carried the same look as the redesigned B and was relettered to the D in 1994. |

Hopefully, I will try to explain the differences in a easy to understand fashion.102B3-Built from 1992-1993. A 102A3 with a different cooling system-fans & shroud around the radiators-Brake lite just above engine door. Engines offered: 6V92,8V92,CAT 3206 and Cummings M11 102C3 Built from 1988-1993 A coach with a 3inch higher ceiling (as mentioned-look at the drip rails above the passenger windows-B3 have 1 C-3's have 2) 1992 saw a slight modification with the new cooling system. Same engines were available as the B3's 102D3 Built from 1994 to 2005 Basically a 102C3 with alot of new features like fuel tank and AC moved from behind front wheels to center of coach and, a smaller 3rd luggage bay to accomodate the new engines, new style rear end design with tail lites incorporated higher and added brake lites mounted in the upper rear new the roof. The tag axle and Drive axels were moved forward to. Inside is identical to the B3 and C3. Engine choices included the Detroit Diesel Series 60 (inline 6 cyl turbo) Detroit Diesel Series 50 (inline 4 cyl turbo) Cat C15 and Cummins ISM. The 6V92 and 8V92 engines were discontinued due to not meeting new emissions and the Series 60 would not fit in the classic design so this was the regeneration style. The 102DL3 is the 45 foot version of the 102D3. Hope that makes sense! BTW, Adirondack, Pine Hill and NY Trailways operated all MCI 40 foot models. All 102B3's have been retired as of last week with the arrival of the new Prevost H3-45's. A few 102D3's remain (were bought with Eaton 10 speed AutoShifts -with clutches (some retro to 10speed Ultra Shifts -clutchless trans. Don't expect them to be around after next years new bus purchases> |

I don't know about all the B3's being retired just yet, as they were was one here in the city this past weekend with some of their J model MCI's and a Prevost in the parking lot opposite the exit ramp to the tunnel from the Port Authority, 9th Avenue and 40th Street. Looked pretty good, didn't get the number as I was on a Shortline headed Upstate. Might be retired by now, or used to provide extra service where needed for charter work, etc.Thanks. |
