That almost works in the immediate area of the Brighton Line where many Avenues are running diagonally (although you end up with two Ds, and E for Newkirk). But picture yourself walking along one of E2-E5 Sts (map). You encounter: Albemarle Rd (pseudo-Av A) Church Av (diagonal) Beverly Rd (pseudo-Av B) Av C Cortelyou Rd (pseudo-Av D) Ditmas Av (pseudo-Av E) Av F But then Ditmas Av's location in the abecedarian scheme changes. Now picture yourself walking along E94 St (map). You encounter: Av A Av B Ditmas Av (pseudo-Av C) Av D Nolans Ln (minor) Foster Av (pseudo-Av E) Farragut Rd (pseudo-Av F) Glenwood Rd (pseudo-Av G) But arguably, Ditmas Av should be renamed Av E between Dahill Rd and Coney Island Av, and 18th Av should be renamed Ditmas Av between 47 St and Coney Island Av. BTW, this is similar situation in Flatbush/East Flatbush nabes where you have two F streets, Foster and Farragut Roads. I believe Foster is considered Ave. F since it runs further east and west than Farragut Road. Foster looks like it should be Eoster over there. But something goes seriously messed up at E56 St, where Farragut Rd suddenly becomes Glenwood Rd (map), whilst at E58 St Glenwood Rd becomes Av H (map). I'd be amazed if this doesn't cause quite a bit of confusion. What's also quite interesting is how the entire abecedarian scheme fizzles out. It wouldn't be any more absurd than what's gone on further west for the scheme to continue: Av B: New Lots Av - Dumont Av Av C / Ditmas Av: Linden Blvd - Hegeman Av - Linden Blvd Av D: De Witt Av - Linden Blvd - Loring Av - 149 Av - Bristol Av Av E / Foster Av: Stanley Av - 151 Av Av F / Farragut Rd: Wortman Av - 153 Av Av G / Glenwood Rd: Cozine Av - 155 Av Flatlands Av: 156 Av Av J: Vandalia Av But of course that would be horrible - as is the existing abecedarian pseudo-grid. It's just the existing is familiar, and therefore probably not as jarring as if someone proposed it de novo. |
