Posted by W.B. on Fri Sep 11 13:18:55 2026 September 11, 1972 - The Book of Route Renumberings and First Runs Manhattan and Staten Island, New York New York City Transit Authority - Staten Island Bus Division Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (NYCO Division) On this day, several new express buses or branches are launched: - A rush-hours-only Oakwood-Manhattan express branch of the R9X (the main Staten Island-Manhattan express had been in operation since 1968), running from Tysens Lane to Broadway and Park Place or 57th Street and Third Avenue - The aforementioned original R9X line is redesignated as R13X - A new rush-hour express route, R11X Great Kills-Manhattan Express, is launched; it runs from Arthur Kill Road and Richmond Avenue to Pearl and Frankfort Streets or 57th Street and Third Avenue As well, after countless legal delays, MaBSTOA's new Hudson Depot on Pier 57 opens for business. It replaces the extremely cramped former New York City Omnibus' 12th Street depot which hereafter closes (and where most buses stored there had to be parked on the street when not on the road), and also picks up some routes from other depots, namely the M13 8th Street Crosstown, M15 23rd Street Crosstown, M16 34th Street Crosstown and M21 Houston Street-Avenue C Crosstown from 54th Street, and M11 Ninth and Amsterdam Avenues from 132nd Street. Its initial roster of buses, besides those previously at 12th Street, consisted of transfers from the 54th Street, 100th Street and Amsterdam depots. It has the capacity to house up to 200 buses, though mostly 165 were held during its service life.
