W.B.'s Bus Almanac for June 3rd

Posted by W.B. on Wed Jun 3 17:15:19 2026

June 3, 1962 - The Book of Route Service Changes

Manhattan, New York
Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority
(NYCO Division)

In the first major change of traffic patterns since the establishment of MaBSTOA and its takeover of operations of former Fifth Avenue Coach and Surface Transit routes, several streets in lower and downtown Manhattan are converted to varying traffic patterns. One of the more complex involves Greenwich Street, which becomes one-way northbound between Battery Place and Morris Street, one-way southbound between Gansevoort and Houston Streets and Spring and Rector Streets, and two-way between Houston and Spring Streets. Other changes are:
- Washington Street: One-way northbound between Rector and Spring Streets and Houston and 14th Streets, and two-way between Spring and Houston Streets
- Spring Street: Two-way between West and Greenwich Streets
- Ninth Avenue: Two-way between Gansevoort and 14th Streets
- Trinity Place and Church Street: One-way northbound
- Broadway: One-way southbound between Canal Street and Bowling Green
- West Broadway: One-way southbound between Lispenard and Vesey Streets

In accordance with these changes, the following bus lines are rerouted accordingly in one or more directions:
- 5 - Sixth Avenue: Southbound on West Broadway between Lispenard and Vesey Streets.
- 6 - Broadway and Seventh Avenue: Northbound on Greenwich Street, Trinity Place and Church Street.
- 10 - Eighth Avenue and Central Park West: Rerouted southbound on Greemwich Street (south of Reade Street) between West Broadway and Cortlandt Street, and westbound on Cortlandt; then on northbound runs, on Dey Street to Church Street and northbound on northbound on Church Street to Reade Street to its regular route.
- 11 - Ninth and Amsterdam Avenues: (announced as) From its southern terminus on Abingdon Square, westbound on Bethune Street to West Street, then northbound on West Street to Tenth Avenue and 14th Street. (It is not known how long this route pattern lasted.)
