30 new buses - GMC "Old Look" TDH-5106's numbered 1060-1089 (serial numbers 0070-0099) - enter service in Manhattan and the Bronx on this date. These buses will be renumbered 3260-3289 by MaBSTOA in 1963, and remain in service through circa 1970 under their aegis, and up to circa 1972 after they are transferred to the Transit Authority for service in the outer boroughs.

At the time, it was announced that 25 new buses would enter service soon afterwards. It would turn out to be 10 Mack C-49-DT's, numbered 2990-2999 (serial numbers 1006-1015), which will enter service in October. These will be renumbered 4990-4999 in 1963 and remain in service until 1967. (It wouldn't be for another two years until more Macks enter STS service.)

September 13, 1987 - The Book of Deaths

John A. Moreland, former president of Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc. from 1960 until 1962, dies at age 93 in River Edge, NJ. A World War I-era veteran who served in the New York State National Guard at the time of the 1916 Mexican uprising, Mr. Moreland joined Fifth Avenue Coach Company in 1910 as an apprentice mechanic, served for years as vice-president in charge of maintenance, was named a director in 1954 and vice-president and general manager in 1959; he had been president of FACL since the death of longtime president John E. McCarthy in June 1960. It was during Moreland's time as FACL president that the company (and its Surface Transit subsidiary) took delivery of the last-ever buses (100 TDH-5301 "New Look" buses - 3111-3160 assigned to FACL, 3161-3210 assigned to ST) made for the company; but most of the time he and the company were fighting off a hostile takeover bid from Harry S. Weinberg, which took a massive toll on FACL's finances; after Weinberg took over FACL in 1962, Moreland, executive vice-president Stephen C. Duggan and chairman Howard S. Cullman all retired. In his later years, Mr. Moreland served as a parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church in River Edge, and was a director for Catholic Big Brothers. He is survived by a son, a sister, 10 grandchildren and 14 great-children.
