June 13-15, 1943 - The Book of Wartime Restrictions and Route Service Changes

New York City
Fifth Avenue Coach Company
New York City Omnibus Corporation
Surface Transportation Corporation of New York
(etc.)

In accordance with U.S. Office of Defense Transportation (ODT)-ordered cutbacks in bus service to save gas, several bus lines, mostly in Manhattan, are either curtailed heavily or, in some cases, eliminated altogether, with Sunday service on several routes suspended and other routes truncated significantly, and weekday service affected on Fifth Avenue Coach routes beginning June 14 and on routes of New York City Omnibus effective June 15.

Service on Fifth Avenue Coach's Routes 6 - 72nd Street Crosstown and 16 - Elmhurst Crosstown are discontinued, Sunday service on Routes 3 - Fifth, St. Nicholas and Convent Avenues and 20 - 57th Street Crosstown is ended, and weekday restrictions on Routes 2 - Fifth and Seventh Avenues (namely their short line to 125th Street), 3, 4 - Fifth and Fort Washington Avenues, and 5 - Fifth Avenue-Riverside Drive begin on June 14.

NYC Omnibus' Routes 8 - Seventh Avenue, 21 - Houston Street and Avenue C, and the branches of TB - Triborough Bridge that travel to Astoria are suspended entirely, while Sunday service is eliminated on Routes 1 and 2 - Fourth and Madison Avenues, 3 - Lexington Avenue, 4 - Lexington and Lenox Avenues, 5 - Sixth Avenue, 6 - Broadway and Seventh Avenue, 7 - Broadway, Columbus and Lenox Avenues, and 10 - Eighth Avenue and Central Park West. Effective June 15, 3's north end will be truncated from 131st Street to 116th Street, while one of the branches of 14 - 14th Street Crosstown has its eastern terminus shortened from FDR Drive to Avenue A.

Meanwhile, in the Bronx, shuttle bus service to and from Orchard Beach is resumed.

(As to the affected routes, NYCO's 21 will be ordered resumed effective July 19 by order of the Public Service Commission, while FACCo's 6 and NYCO's 8 will be restored on August 23 [as would the northern terminus of NYCO's 3 to 131st Street], and Sunday service restored to FACCO's 3 and 20 and to NYCO's 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 on August 29, upon ODT's August 15 revocation of their May 27 order. However, FACCo's 16 - which, at the point of its ODT-ordered discontinuance, had traveled to La Guardia Airport since April 28, 1940 - will not resume until November 1, 1945, and thereafter will not travel any farther north than its pre-1940 terminus of 82nd Street and Northern Boulevard; and the Astoria legs of NYCO's TB will not be resumed until after the war, likewise for 14's aforementioned eastern branch.)
