Posted by W.B. on Wed Apr 7 02:15:21 2021 April 7, 1934 - The Book of First Runs and Route Service Changes Manhattan, New York Fifth Avenue Coach Company A new crosstown route, designated No. 20 - 57th Street, begins service on this date. At the outset, it only operates from 59th Street and Sutton Place to Columbus Circle. It will be extended farther west to 55th Street and 12th Avenue on March 15, 1937, and from July 5, 1939 to December 6, 1942 its western terminus will be as far afield as West 42nd Street Ferry. (This new route is an amalgam of two franchises assigned to FACCo by the Bureau of Franchises in late 1933, M-35 - Eighth Avenue and 57th Street and M-38 - East 57th Street; the 1937 extension would cover an added franchise, M-43 - West 57th Street and 12th Avenue, that was allotted around 1935.) Also, the 6 - 72nd Street Crosstown line's eastern terminus is extended one block, from First Avenue to York Avenue. (Source: "Fifth Avenue Coach Company." Motor Coach Age, July-August 1971.) |
