Re: My Proposed Brooklyn Bus Network redesign

I don't think with the current number of overnight riders and the MTA's budget situation and their willingness to provide service, there is any chance the MTA will double overnight service, although I wish they would. That's why I proposed what I did.

The sad thing is that the planning service guidelines are a joke. When they were established in the late 1970s at the insistence of then City Council President Carol Bellamy because of the severe 1975 bus cuts, the minimum service that could be provided was ten minutes during rush hours and 20 minutes at other times.

They were supposed to protect us from future cuts as were the guidelines of maximum walk of 1/4 mile to a bus route.

When the MTA wanted to reduce overnight service to every 30 minutes, they first changed the overnight guidelines, then lowered service. They did the same thing when they cut overnight service to every 60 minutes, and minimum midday and evening service from every 20 to 30 minutes. Now they just ignore them with a few routes running at 75 minute intervals overnight.
