Re: W.B.'s Bus Almanac for September 10th

Like many other things, it's based in history. The original 72nd Street crosstown actually ran east on W. 72nd St. westbound, and west on W. 72nd St. eastbound. It started at 72nd & CPW and then went via Broadway, 59th/CPS (or 57th?) and Fifth/Madison to get to the East Side. All this presumably due to the absence of a transverse road through Central Park at 72nd St., hence this awkward solution to providing crosstown service.

When they finally came up with a normal 72nd St. routing that ran westward westbound and eastward eastbound on the West Side by sharing the 66th St. transverse road with the 66th St. crosstown bus, clearly it was felt that the original routing ought to be maintained for customers accustomed to using the route to reach locations along the south side of Central Park. Hence, the M30. Not surprisingly, such service was not all that much in demand and was probably fated to die off.

At least that's how I see it.
