Re: Proposed Reconstruction and Expansion of the Jamaica Bus Depot

The situation of all cars facing the same direction brings to mind the car consist situation on the IRT with the Hi-Vs and Lo-Vs. 10 car trains had 7 motors and 3 trailer but they were configured in 5 car groups with the 4 motor 5s north and the 3 motor 5s south. In both configurations the car immediately behind the operating cat was a trailer. Overnight the trains were cut 5X5 and just before the AM rush added back to full 10 car consists. On Lo-V lines while re adding the consists back the same way in the AM was preferable, it wasn’t too critical since all the cars were MUDC. On the Bway Exp which was the only 10 car Hi-V line it was an absolute must to have the trains added in the same order since the 4 motor 5s had the pilot motor (manual door car) on the north end and the 3 motor 5s had the pilot motor on the South end. When the trains re added in the morning they had to be configured with the pilot motors on each end. On Fri PMs since the exp services ran with 7 cars, the operation was slightly different. Usually it was the 3 north cars which were M-T-M that were cut leaving the 7 south cars to run all weekend until Mon AM when they 3 car butts were re added to the arriving 7 car trains to make the 10 car consists for AM service. The same practice was done on the Bway Exp which meant that the pilot motor was always on the south end of the train since the 4 motor 5 was always the north 5 cars of the train. The reason that on weekends 7 car trains ran overnight was that cutting 5X5 for Sat midnight service and trying to add 2 car butts for daytime service would have been too labor intensive so it was easier to just cut the trains to the lengths required for normal weekend daytime service.
