They have no tie to the MTA. They are a NYCDOT franchise holder. Most of those ceased to exist when they were bought out in the creation of MTA BUus. Right now, I believe it is just B110 and "The Red Bus" on Roosevelt Island.

Red Bus is free, and B110 is unsubsidized....

NetroCard can be used for non MTA applications..NICE Bus, PATH, and JFK Airtrain are prime examples, but they require complex agreements and systems for allocation of revenue, and in the case of NICE, transfers add another layer.

Why pay for something you have no real need for.
