Eliminating the left turn southbound into Union Turnpike causes a lot of inconvenience and wasn't that obvious in my opinion. I agree though that it was a big bottleneck that now has been eliminated.

But back in 2014 when they were doing the Congested Corridors study before they began the SBS study, I suggested a better solution than eliminating that left turn. It was to allow the service road go through the LIRR tracks at grade since there are only two freight trains a day using those tracks. Allowing general traffic or even only buses if they ever increased rail service would.have greatly improved traffic flow. The project head Gregory Haas told me they were even thinking about it but were afraid to propose it because thought it would sound too crazy.
