I find it interesting that seventy or eighty years ago the interstate bus companies would find a way to serve their passengers in off-street terminals, whether in midtown or near 168th Street. When we rode a Public Service bus to meet a Susquehanna train (not yet the RDC prototype), I do not recall the Manhattan terminal. However, I do recall boarding Greyhound at both 34th and 50th street terminals, but that was because PABT could not yet handle Greyhound.--- When PABT opened in 1950, I thought that carriers were forbidden to do curbside loading anymore. When the Putnam Division gave up, Walters got curb permission about 41st and 7th Avenue. --- I agree with the complaints in the article. There is too much idling, fouling the air, to provide air conditioning inside the bus. Ridiculous is the lack of a waiting room and restrooms. --- My complaints extend to the jitneys. Some have moved into the terminal, I realize, but the others should be shut down until they get off the streets. |
