In a tractor artic, the engine is in the center of the front body and drives the center axle. The rear axle countersteers based on the joint's rotating action.

In a pusher artic, the engine is mounted in the very rear like a standard bus, and drives the rear axle. The center axle is a "dead" axle that only provides weight support and braking.

NJT had Volvo tractor artics from 1985 until 2004, and Neoplan pushers since then. MTA has only used pushers from New Flyer and Nova.
