7 year old boy killed by Bx41 + Select Bus (NY1 / NY Daily News report)

Posted by gold_12th on Sun May 27 13:22:14 2018, in response to 7 year old boy killed by Bx41 + Select Bus (CBS-2 news report), posted by gold_12th on Sat May 26 23:59:25 2018.

A seven-year-old boy riding a scooter was killed Saturday in the Bronx after an MTA bus hit him, the city police department said.

Police said Shevon Bethea of Brownsville, Brooklyn was riding his scooter around 3:30 p.m. near Webster Ave. and East 184th St. in Tremont when the bus, which was travelling southbound on Webster Ave., hit the boy.

Officials said responding officers found the boy on the ground with severe body trauma, and he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Sources said a Bx41 Select Bus Service (Nova LFS artic #5780) bus hit Bethea, and the 38-year-old driver was taken out of service, which is typical for a situation like this. According to sources, no one on the bus was injured.

Police said the driver stayed on the scene, and an investigation is ongoing.

Eyewitnesses said Bethea was riding his motorized scooter down the steep incline of 184th St. and the bus hit him as soon as he entered the intersection of Webster Ave. Some eyewitnesses said the bus had the green light, according to sources.

Sources said the bus hit the young boy with its right-front bumper, with Bethea falling clear of the bus.

It is unclear if the driver knew the boy had been struck before coming to a stop across 184th St. No charges have been filed at this time.

Sources said the driver has been on the job for a little more than three years.

An MTA spokesperson said in a statement, "This is a tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this young boy. We are working closely with police."

A 7-year-old boy was struck and killed by a city bus Saturday as he rode his Razor scooter across a Bronx road, cops said.

The child, Shevon Bethea, was zipping along on Webster Ave. near E. 184th St. when a BX41 bus slammed into him about 3:30 p.m., authorities said.

Shevon, who lived in Brownsville, Brooklyn, was visiting his father in Fordham Heights. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, but it was too late.

"I lost my son. I lost my little boy," said the victim's mother, who identified herself as Nickya.

"He really wanted to be somebody. He always brought back straight A's."

"He's loving, caring, always happy," the 30-year-old mother said. "He always lit up the entire room, and he was always checking in on me."

Shevon's 10-year-old brother, DiShawn, who witnessed the horrific accident, told family members the bus driver ran a red light and dragged the boy for at least a block.

"He's traumatized," the grieving mom said of her eldest son. "He saw it, he watched him get hit. I have to deal with two sets of trauma."

Police Officer George Tsourovakas, an NYPD spokesman, said cops were "investigating every facet of this incident."

An MTA spokesman declined to comment on the family's accusations and refused to reveal how long the driver was with the agency or whether or not he has a clean driving record.

The bus driver, 38, told authorities he didn't see Shevon, police sources said.

He stayed at the scene and was not immediately charged. Cops said one witness told investigators the boy suddenly appeared in the intersection.
