I don't know for sure- but perhaps here's still a starter battery? I know that hybrid (don't know about pure electric) automobiles have a standard 12-volt battery in addition to they big battery that powers the car's motors. The 12-volter, like in a conventional car, is used to run auxiliary systems and to start the gasoline engine.

Now, in a pure electric, there is obviously no engine starter. But perhaps there are still electronic computerized gizmos needed to start the electric drive system ? And those might need a smaller (than the main drive battery) so that the whole shebang can run in a "sleep" mode when the bus is layed over? Sort of how laptops and desktops have a tiny, nickel-sized battery to keep the BIOS alive even when the machine is off?

This is just my best guess.
