The idea of eliminating the "X" is so that even if you make a mistake, you're at least headed to the right borough. If you take the BxM1 instead of the BxM2, you're still going to the Bronx and you can probably make an easier connection to the specific location you wanted. If you mistakenly take the X27 instead of the X22, you're headed for Brooklyn instead of Staten Island. |
