The non-lazy cops usually go for the leader of the pack since that's the one they clocked. Sometimes they'll pull over a whole lane. The trick to avoiding it is, the moment the lights come up behind you, pull out of the way and stop immediately. The one they have to chase the farthest gets the "prize".
