Even though Surface Transportation was a subsidiary of TARS (Third Avenue Railway System), free transfers between the original Bronx bus lines and the remaining streetcars (1946 or so) were not offered. Trolley transfers were good on trolleys, as listed on the three-part ticket. TARS had learned its lesson, and the bus routes weren't going to offer free transfers to intersecting trolleys. Surface bus transfers were valid on other Surface bus lines, but there weren't that many intersections of routes, as some of the original bus lines were mere feeders, isolated. I never did it, but I think you could transfer from the Bx1 to the Bx10 (Riverdale) at West 231st Street and Broadway, but you could not transfer to the C car, the present Bx9.

With the Metrocard, a passenger can sometimes work a one-fare round trip on routes that meet twice. On the Concourse, of course, one can ride south on the bus and use the Metrocard within 2h:18 to return home on the D.
