I, too remember the blast. I went and graduated from Pace College which is a block away or Park Row. I think the blast was on a Friday and I had left the school at 11 AM

I remember going to the school for an Accounting Society meeting the next day (Saturday). I walked to the site and couldn't believe my eyes. I remember seeing one of NY's Bravest gingerly putting a ladder against what remained of the north wall to mount a floodlight so the operation could proceed into the night. Another Fireman was "spotting" for him (like in gymnastic). The first guy must have felt something shift and he jumped off that ladder and moved away. Fortunately nothing happened.

I think the street level contained a bar. One of the survivors told a reporter that he had his foot up on the bar rail and the next thing he knew he was holding onto the rail so as not to fall into the pit.
