For individuals, there's no obligation to have a lawyer. But for corporations and LLCs, a lawyer is generally required to appear in court . . . but in small claims court in NYC a corporation does not need a lawyer. Small claims makes its forum more accessible to non-lawyers (there are many "how-to" booklets), whereas other courts can be more intimidating to non-lawyers. |
