Blame on the detriorating Orion V buses

690 (40 foot) bus order

MTA is revising the 40 foot bus order... The plan is to increase the base order from 690 buses to 762 buses, increase of 72 buses. MTA will decrease the amount on the option order from 700 buses to 628 buses, a difference of 72 buses.

The new revised bus order total:
Base order: 762 buses, funded on the 2010-2014 MTA Capital program.
Option order: 628 buses, not yet funded on 2015-2019 MTA Capital program; pending Albany approval.

The total amount of base and option bus orders remain unchange at 1390 buses.

The 72 buses change will be modified on the existing contract, estimated cost $42 million, subject to approval on the MTA board. Terms of which bus manufacturer(s) to deliver 72 additional buses remains not out yet.

256 articulated bus order

MTA is revising the 60 foot bus order... The plan is to decrease the base order from 256 buses to 231 buses, a loss of 25 buses. MTA will decrease the amount on the option order from 275 buses to 300 buses, increase of 25 buses.

The new revised bus order total:
Base order: 231 buses, funded on the 2010-2014 MTA Capital program.
Option order: 300 buses, not yet funded on 2015-2019 MTA Capital program; pending Albany approval.

The total amount of base and option bus orders remain unchange at 531 buses.

There will be approximately 25+ "Best condition" New Flyer D60HF buses surviving for another 3 to 5 years (13 to 15 years old). So, they may get another overhaul in the next coming months.

The RFP should in the next couple months. MTA expects to award around CHRISTMAS 2015.

That means most of the remaining D60HF buses will be 13 and 14 years old.

Reason why: Orion V buses won't make it past 2016
"the Orion 1999 fleet, in particular, has proved to be expensive, unreliable, and susceptible to unrepairable structural corrosion."

Originally planned 72 Orion V buses and 345 RTS buses after 690 buses, that plan is scrap. Now, 72 new buses will be replace.

If the MTA Board does not approve these changes..."Proceed with the approved, funded project for the replacement of256 articulated buses and wait for approval of 2015-2019 Capital Program to begin the process of procuring standard buses to replace expensive, unreliable, significantly over-age buses. This alternative is not recommended, for the reasons of operational and financial risks."

Details of the changes...
