The first commuter buses have rolled off the new Prevost assembly line at the Nova Bus plant in the Town of Plattsburgh.

The company, based in Sainte-Claire, Quebec, invested $26 million in a 10,000-square-foot expansion tied to the new line, the first Prevost assembly line in the United States.

The addition is expected to increase employment at the plant by 50 workers during the next two years, to a total of about 250.

FIRST BUS DEC. 5

The expansion, approved by the Town of Plattsburgh Planning Board in 2013, was tied to a $164.8 million contract with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York for 300 commuter over-the-road buses, similar to those used by commercial bus lines.

That contract was approved by the MTA Board of Directors in July 2013, and the first bus rolled off the line in Plattsburgh on Dec. 5 of this year.

MORE COMPETITIVE

"As a global leader in the motorcoach industry, we are extremely proud that our relentless pursuit of excellence leads us in this last American market segment," Prevost President Gaétan Bolduc said.

"This first assembly line in the United States will allow us to increase the company's competitive position."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the official opening of the new line shows how one region of the state can support another.

"Our approach to economic development has always been to support local opportunities and invest from the ground up, and this project is another example of how that approach is creating jobs for New Yorkers," he said in a press release.

EMPIRE STATE FUNDING

Empire State Development provided $200,000 in grants for the new assembly line in support of the new jobs it will create.

"As a result of the expansion project, Prevost is better positioned to meet the needs of its major customers, such as the MTA, and compete in the global marketplace and the local economy benefits," Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Kenneth Adams said in a statement.

FIFTH ANNIVERSARY

The MTA's New York City Transit has a $195 million contract for 414 Nova Bus transit buses, with options for up to 700 more. Those buses are scheduled for delivery starting in mid 2015.

Nova Bus President Jean-Pierre Baracat said they are pleased that New York City Transit renewed its confidence in the company.

"As we are celebrating our fifth anniversary in Plattsburgh this year, renewing our partnership with NYC Transit is a welcome opportunity to strengthen our presence in the U.S.," he said.

State Sen. Betty Little said that while the facility expansion and creation of new jobs is welcome news for this region, New York City also benefits from a quality product made in the North Country.

Assemblywoman Janet Duprey said the partnership is all the more special because the buses are built in Plattsburgh, by North Country workers, to provide comfortable, state-of-the-art bus transportation for New York City riders.

"The success of Nova and Prevost validates the support of the Governor's Office and the relationship with upstate leaders," Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett said.

County Legislature Chairman Samuel R. Dyer said Prevost's expansion will "strengthen the North County's role as a leader in the transportation industry and create dozens of new jobs."
