I take the X14 most mornings, it is a convenient one-seat ride from the end of my driveway to a block from my building in downtown Manhattan. Taking the ferry would necessitate two buses and unless by an act of God coordinated two buses and the ferry an additional each way 20 minutes to my commute.

Lost in the imbroglio over the Verrazano Bridge Birthday-toll increase (which thanks to Assemblyman Michael Cusick and Senators Andrew Lanza and Diane Savino will not increase for Islanders.) is that express bus fares will once again go up. A $6.50 ride is $13 a day round trip.

I realize I am paying extra for the convenience and time savings, however, the express bus used to be twice the fare of a local subway or bus. The local subway bus fare is to rise to $2.75, meaning the express bus fare should be $5.50, It's already $6, why is it rising to $6.50?

Nearly 10 percent of Staten Island's population, over 40,000 people, take an express bus every day. It is our defacto subway line that the MTA never built. So, MTA, either build the Island subway we were promised or have the decency to keep express bus fares double the local fare, meaning lower it to $5.50.
