With that particular route with Trailways (and its the same with Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and Toronto), the service is "Pooled." Each schedule change, the revenue share is evaluated and the service level (and company assignments as to who does what) is determined.

From there each company basically "cuts out" their own portions and develops a driver and equipment schedule. This pool is a bit different, as drivers and buses are qualified to be paired together in a single trip.

For example, in the case of Toronto for example, it might be a Greyhound driver in a Greyhound bus to Syracuse and then a NY Trailways driver from Syracuse to Buffalo, then a Greyhound Canada driver takes it from Buffalo to Toronto.

After it's been decided who does what and how, the schedules are plugged into the front line system (Trips) and the back end system (BOSS) and combined. Each company operates its own schedules and if extras are needed, they are worked by the company operating that particular trip. If they need help (Greyhound always needs help), then the other steps in.

The PPB pool is similar, except the drivers are not allowed to drive each other's buses.

And yes, it was really cool to oversee the national (and international) operation in Dallas.
