Posted by BusMgr on Mon Jul 28 13:57:04 2014, in response to NY MTA will install "active collision avoidance" & "Pedestrians, bus is turning!" warning systems, posted by Gold_12th on Sun Jul 27 21:37:45 2014. I see two potential issues.First, increased noise pollution from exterior annunciators that may annoy neighboring residents. Second, installation of such a system may reduce the attentiveness and/or care of bus drivers who reason that, so long as there is an annunciator "warning" pedestrians, that the duty to avoid a collision is transferred from themselves to the pedestrians. This could lead to bus drivers just blindly turning, and exercising less care, resulting in an increased number of pedestrian injuries and fatalities. (A close analogy exists with marked pedestrian crosswalks. Studies show that pedestrians are less attentive when crossing in a marked pedestrian crosswalk, compared to unmarked pedestrian crosswalk, because many pedestrians have a false sense of security when using a marked crosswalk, and they exercise more care when using an unmarked crosswalk.) |
