Over the next decade...
Articulated and extended length buses are assumed phased out over the Plan time frame.

Metro is standardizing on 40-foot buses as the maximum vehicle size.

While this will increase operating costs, it is expected to be offset by a reduction in acquisition and maintenance costs.

Vehicle Costs – Based on Metro’s recent procurements of compressed natural gas buses, the price in 2014 was $554,000 per standard 40-foot bus (includes extra parts from plant assembly, sales tax and labor force account of Metro expenses) and is escalated annually by CPI after FY 2014.

The financial forecast assumes the same price for Metro and Municipal Operators for bus purchases. Municipal Operators purchase buses separately using criteria unique to their own needs and standards and the actual price may vary from the forecast assumptions.

It is assumed that 200 buses will be purchased annually to replace the basic active bus fleet of Metro.

Replacement buses: 13 years
Average age of bus fleet: 6 years

Expansion Services – A new transit corridor and Metro Rapid line in the East San Fernando Valley is included in the Measure R transit program and funded in the Plan.

It is assumed that Transportation System Management (TSM) program and other techniques to ensure rapid movement of buses along the highways will occur as technology improvements and funding emerge in years ahead. Funds for overall system upgrades are provided.
