A 52-year-old West New York man was arrested after he tried to grab a driver’s cash envelope on an NJ Transit bus driving through the city Sunday, according to police.

Gerardo Ruiz faces charges of robbery and interference of transportation, and was ordered held at the Bergen County Jail on $50,000 bail in connection with an incident on the Bergenfield to Fairview bus, Detective Capt Timothy Torell said.

Ruiz thought he overpaid the fare by $1.35 and “aggressively approached” the 32-year-old driver as she piloted the bus down South Dean Street, Torell said.

When the driver told Ruiz he paid the correct fare, he reached across the driver and tried to snatch the cash she carried in an envelope on her left, Torell said.

“The bus driver elbowed the man in his midsection because she stated she literally couldn’t see ahead on the road and couldn’t properly control the bus,” the captain said. “Ruiz backed off and the bus driver called the police.”

City Officers Nathaniel Kinlaw and George Coleman arrested Ruiz, who also had a $500 warrant for failing to appear in West New York Municipal Court on a disorderly persons offense, police added.
