They schedule a two and a half hour layover (even though there are several buses on the second leg in the meantime). So a missed connection is very unlikely.

Also, the fare is *more expensive* than booking them separately. On the day I searched, Durham to New York is $72. Separately, Durham to DC is $37, and DC to New York is $14, for a total of $51.

If they didn't refuse to sell tickets to walk-up passengers without a reservation except in New York (the last I heard), my strategy would be to reserve the first leg, and just ride the next bus out on a walk-up basis for the second leg.
