I'm talking of the interior "stop requested" sign...

Though I would say all the exterior signage has been done poorly.

Side sign: when the side showed the destination it was useful at stops where it could be going either direction. The streets it runs on isn't that useful since you should presumably know that by the route number. I guess it is useful to people unfamiliar with the routes, so it kindof gets a pass.

Front sign: The front signs now instead of showing just the destination show every major stop along the way, which again is useless in situations where you're unsure of what direction you're going. At UAlbany and Crossgates it's at the point where people don't bother reading the sign anymore since it's easier to ask the driver rather than waiting until "Broadway and Orange" or "C'gates Commons" scrolls by. May as well not have a sign at all.
The drivers on weekends manually change the front sign to WAL-MART since at UAlbany every third person would ask which direction it was going, and the ones who didn't would go the wrong way (Since Crossgates Mall is displayed for both directions). There is a similar problem in that both directions of the 114 say "Downtown Albany".

Rear sign: And of course the rear sign is *completely useless* on the novas since it only displays the route when the bus is accelerating away from you. While it is slowing down or stopped it just blinks "stop" so you are unsure whether you should run for the bus or not. Do you know what else indicates "stop" to motorists behind you? A $10 taillight. Why have they reduced a $200 sign to the utility of a $10 taillight?

So in conclusion, I would say the exterior digital signage on CDTA has managed to be programmed into being useless over the years. I can understand why they stayed with rollsigns so long, someone in the company had the wisdom to realize that they'd somehow fuck up digital signage and it wasn't worth the additional cost.
