You run into a light pole. It wasn't the light pole's fault. Your liability coverage pays for property damage to the pole. Your collision pays for damage to your auto.

If you run into a stopped vehicle, the police are going to be hard pressed to give a ticket to the driver of the stopped vehicle. Your liability coverage pays for property damage to other vehicle (hopefully not bodily injury for the other driver, but that's what it's for). Your collision pays for damage to your vehicle.

If your vehicle is totalled you get a check (less than replacement); if you're upside-down on the loan, you probably should have had "gap" insurance. Leased vehicles usually include this as part of the payment.
