Expired Metrocard

I had to take a bus the other day, the last time I used my Metrocard was in March. As the bus was arriving, I pulled out my Metrocard and noticed that it expired on June 30th. This was July 5th. When I put the card in, it read "expired" on the bus's display. The driver looked at his watch to check the date, and let me on. I told him I was going to replace it at the subway station. I could not use the Metrocard machine to just transfer the money from the old card to the new one, as it would not accept a "0.00" amount to add, so I went to the station agent and she gave me a new card. When I inserted the card in the subway turnstile, it deducted the fare (so I didn't cheat the MTA). I assume that the bus did not subtract any money from the expired card. Two interesting items I noticed on the bus: the display that reads "adult fare, student, etc. ) was missing and the handwritten bus number on the metrocard reader and the "red sign in front of the driver did not match the number plate on the inside where the destination control box was mounted on. However, the outside of the bus might have had the correct matching #. Since a passenger on the bus would only look at that incorrect # on the display board, it would make it difficult to correctly identify the bus if it was later necessary to do so.
