Reminds me of what happened on the B49 on a trip home from the beach in the 1960s. This was before you could only ring once. The driver was getting annoyed that people were ringing multiple times for the same stop. So he made an announcement that if there is more tan one ring he will not stop.

An unlucky passenger rang to get off at Avenue W. He rang a second time just before the stop to be sure the driver heard. He skipped the stop and explained why. More than one ring occurred every block and the driver wouldn't stop. The man got very angry then and purposely rang the bell about 25 times. Long story short, the man was let off at Avenue K when he rang only once. All this time no one had to get on.

There were no cell phones to call the police. Good thing the bus driver didn't work for Mr Softee.
