A merger will not work in this region. DDOT was formed out of DSR, which was supposed to be the regional transit authority that they are now crying for. Detroit wants to use sububrban money to provide a level of service that they have NO INTEREST in providing themselves.

As far as I'm concerned, SMART should fiercely stay independent. In fact, most of these cuts essentially suburbanized the system, as they stopped going into Detroit outside of rush hour. A line has clearly been drawn between SMART and DDOT, where SMART is functional and DDOT is not. Let DDOT disintegrate into dust and then SMART takes everything over.

Again, I blame the federal government. They race up and down the road chasing rogue Chinese operators, but here is an agency with millions of dollars worth of federally funded transit assets rotting and these assets are in such bad shape that the FTA can't even force them to move the buses to other agencies. Now, they are sending 46 more buses to die prematurely. This is ridiculous.
