Public transit in metro Detroit needs a total overhaul. The city in general and DDOT in particular are circling the drain, yet resources are wasted maintaining three different operating organizations (DDOT, SMART and the People Mover). Efforts in the past to merge DDOT and SEMTA/SMART were stymied at both the city and regional levels. A regional agency actually was formed (DARTA) but it isn't clear if it still exists. If a city takeover by the state does occur, hopefully it can be used as an opportunity to remove DDOT from the city politicians, find a way to merge it and the two other agencies into DARTA and undertake a complete overhaul of the system.
