Ny understanding was that the six mechanics did all the splicing of the roll signs. More may have been required for the installation and removal. As far as fixing the electronic signs, they might not break down that frequently, but there are alwasy twenty or so out of service being repaired. All repairs are done by in-house NYCT employees who also fixed the signs for the private companies when they existed. (They paid NYCT naturally for this service.) I believe the only time signs are sent back to the manufacturer for repair is during the one year warranty period. That's the long lead time you refer to. I believe the turn-around time for repair is usually about 48 hours from the time a malfunction is reported if I remember correctly for ones that are not sent back to the manufacturer.
