Did you check out how Brooklyn streets looked in 1924?http://gis.nyc.gov/doitt/nycitymap/ Click on photo, and move the slider to 1924. Shows what streets and buildings actually existed then, not just mapped streets. Not what I expected. Streets weren't built in order. eg. E94, 95 96 Streets built before E 91, E 92, etc. Also the middle of Remsen Avenue came before the ends. Much farmland still existed. Notice north south streets south of East NY Avenue that were totally obliterated. There also was what looks like a bungalow colony south of Ulmer Park. Also interesting is that many avenues looked like Glenwood Road west of Ocean Avenue and Ave R west of Coney Island Avenue with large green malls and two lanes of traffic with no parking. Linden Ave (Blvd) was one of them, but Ave J and K etc also looked that way. You can follow the original streets like Canarsie Lane (Cortelyou Rd) and Canarsie Road which connected to each other. |
