Posted by busway flyer on Thu Nov 19 15:28:44 2009 New Sun Tran Bus Facility Is Taking Off HereNew space alleviates overcrowding at Tucson bus operator's existing spot on South Park ARIZONA DAILY STAR Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.19.2009 A new Sun Tran bus storage and maintenance facility begins operations this week on the northwest side at 3920 N. Sun Tran Blvd. THE FACTS Three-phase project When completed in mid-2011, the city of Tucson-owned 25-acre facility will accommodate 250 buses. It's being built in three phases. A Dual Operation The new location will provide relief to Sun Tran's existing South Park Avenue facility, which is designed for 150 buses but maintains 230. Sun Tran will continue to use both facilities. Going green It is the first local "green" transit facility being built under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The facility will make the most of solar panels, natural lighting, reclaimed water and other energy-efficient features. The price tag: The facility will have a $56 million price tag by the time it's finished. Here's how the cost breaks down: Phase I — $8 million. Sun Tran Boulevard and a fueling facility were completed in October 2005. Work was funded by the Federal Transportation Administration, or FTA, and 1994 city of Tucson bonds. Phase II — $32 million. Work included maintenance and operations buildings, 17 bus bays to repair and maintain the fleet, a fare retrieval area, bus wash and dispatch center. Funding came from FTA and the Regional Transportation Authority, or RTA. Phase III — $16 million. Now in design. Construction, expected to start in mid-2010, will expand the facility and include an administration building for regional transit operations. Federal stimulus funds will cover the final phase.
