The way it was a long time ago (prior to Spring 1969):

BX12 between Sedgwick/Fordham Road and City Island
BX12A between Sedgwick/Fordham Road and Pelham Bay Park
BX12B between Sedgwick/Fordham Road and Orchard Beach (summer only)
BX 19 between 207/Broadway and Southern Blvd./Fordham Road.

Why was it a split route? Because the BX19 was originally a Third Ave. Railway trolley, 207th Street Crosstown. BX12,12A,12B were always bus routes. The BX19 became a bus in 1948 but the route structure was left alone for 20 years.
