The MTA has already shown that having too many irons in the fire at once causes some to get burned. Virtually all of the MTA's big projects are behind and it is blowing up the budget. The MetroCard has the ability to do zone pricing as well as peak/off-peak pricing. Frankly, if the LIRR & Metro-North got "validators", the MetroCard could replace those paper systems too.

It may not be 2009, but to label the MetroCard as caveman technology is wholly inaccurate. The system works pretty well. It would work better if the turnstiles at certain stations got cleaned more, but that isn't a fault of the technology per se. The MTA would be better off pushing the EasyPay MetroCard, reducing their cash handling costs in the process.
